Privacy policy
What the app collects, what never leaves your phone, and why.
Last updated 29 September 2026
What we collect
You can use the app without an account. Community is optional, and only if you join it do we ask for an email address.
The app creates a random device identifier the first time you open it. It is used to count how many AI requests you have made today, so the free daily limit works. If you create a Community account, the account keeps this identifier too.
What stays on your phone
Your lesson progress, word vault, spaced-repetition schedule, mistake history, exam date and target band are stored on this device only. We never receive them.
Recordings of your speaking practice never leave your phone. They are saved in the app's own storage and are overwritten each time you record again. Deleting the app deletes them.
What is sent to our server
When you use an AI feature — essay scoring, translation, the speaking coach, or generated practice — the text you wrote or said is sent to our server, which passes it to an AI provider (Groq, with OpenAI as a backup) and returns the result. The app asks your permission before the first time, and you can turn this off in Settings → Privacy.
We send:
- the text you submitted
- your device identifier
- your chosen native language
We do not send your name, email, progress, recordings or anything else.
Community account
Community is optional. If you create an account, our server stores:
- your email address and a scrambled (hashed) copy of your password
- your public name and the avatar you choose
- your friend code, your friends, and who invited you
- the XP you earn in lessons, your streak and your weekly league
- the cheers you send and receive
- posts, comments and likes you write on the Help board
- reports and blocks you make
Other learners can see your public name, avatar, streak, XP and league, and the posts and comments you write. Your email is never shown to anyone. We use it only to sign you in and to send a password reset code when you ask for one.
To stop password guessing, we keep the internet (IP) address and email of each sign-in attempt for one day, then delete them.
Advertising
The app may show small cards for other apps made by us. There are no ads from other companies. The ads are the same for everyone: they are not targeted and use no personal data.
When an ad is shown or tapped, the app sends only the ad's number, so we can count views and taps. Pro members see no ads. You can report or hide any ad with its ··· button.
Microphone
The microphone is used only while you record a speaking answer or talk to the speaking coach, and only after you tap to start. Recordings are saved on your phone so you can listen back, and are never uploaded to our server.
In the speaking coach, Apple's speech recognition turns your voice into text: on the phone when your iPhone supports it, otherwise through Apple's speech service. That text is then sent to the AI provider as described above.
Payments
Purchases are handled entirely by Apple. We never see your card details. Our server receives only Apple's receipt so it can confirm your subscription is active.
Children
Community is for learners aged 13 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that a child under 13 has created an account, we delete it.
Your choices
Without an account, you can delete everything by deleting the app. You can also use the data deletion page to erase the rows tied to your device identifier.
With a Community account, you can delete it at any time in the app: open Community, tap the account button at the top, then Delete account. This removes your account, posts, comments, likes, friends, cheers, XP history, reports and blocks from our server straight away.
You can turn off AI features at any time in Settings → Privacy.
A record of any past purchase is kept, because tax rules require it, but your identifier is removed from it first so it no longer points at you.
